Skincare: Brown Sugar Body Scrub

Our skin is a very important organ and it’s our largest organ as well. Our skin is extremely porous and absorbs ~50-60% of what we put on it; so when it comes to putting stuff on our skin we really need to be careful of harmful ingredients that we don’t necessarily want ending up inside of our bodies, and I find that many of us neglect to think about the quality and specifics of what we are putting on our skin. The question is always, “well if I’m not eating or drinking it does it really matter?” And the answer is yes, it matters a lot.

I find that there are two seasons that really leave our skin needing some extra love- summer and winter. Summertime comes with sweating, sunblock, sand and sea water- all things that can have an erosive-like effect on our skin; whereas winter comes with brutal cold (for most of us, at least in this part of the world) and extremely dry air. Regardless, our skin should be paid a little (or a lot) of extra attention, whether it’s summer, winter, spring or fall.

I think one of the biggest barriers to really paying attention and choosing premium skincare is that there is a notion that skincare products need to come in fancy containers and should also cost a lot of money- when in fact, exactly the opposite is true. Some of the best skincare is super inexpensive (like this recipe below)- and in fact, the most unprocessed, simplest, and best stuff for your skin comes in simple packaging (see below!!).

Brown Sugar Body Scrub

Now to get down to what this article is really about, this super-simple brown sugar body scrub. The base of this body scrub is a Sweet Almond Oil made by Aura Cacia– a REAL favorite company of mine (and also the supplier of all the products used except for the brown sugar), and then it’s simply mixed with brown sugar and an essential oil for fragrance and extra healthful properties for the skin.

Ingredients/what you’ll need:

What you’ll need:

  • Container for the scrub
  • 1 spoon

Ingredients for the scrub:

  • 5 Tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3-4 Tablespoons sweet almond oil
