6 Energizing Summer Fruits and Veggies

 

Let’s be honest, I think we’re all looking for more energy, right? But I often find that most of us are looking for it in the wrong places- like in the form of coffee and other caffeinated beverages; in short, places that really wont give us more than a quick jolt.

Although it’s certainly the norm to think of caffeine as an energy source, the real place for energy is actually in the food we eat. This is because the food that we eat can either energize us or leave us feeling totally wiped, as frequently we choose foods that require a lot of processing on behalf of our bodies.

This summer let’s try to change the paradigm and aim to get more energy from the food we eat and less from the stimulating beverages we all love (ahem, coffee). To help guide you, I’ve selected a few of my favorite naturally energizing foods and a few recipes for you to try as well.

6 energizing summer fruits and veggies:

  1. Avocados

    Avocado’s are such a power food as they’re chalk-full of healthy fat as well as full of electrolytes magnesium and potassium- both that are nutrients that help to promote healthy muscle function and hydration. Avocados are also anti-inflammatory and also help to promote balanced and healthy blood sugar, which is great for helping you stay fueled for your many summer activities.   2. Citrus fruits

    Citrus fruits are firstly loaded with water, which helps to promote energy because they’re hydrating, but also because they’re a rich source of vitamin C, which is helpful in promoting iron absorption. Try this Green Veggie Smoothie.

  3. Watermelon

    Watermelon is the perfect summer food because it’s light, hydrating and so yummy. Watermelon is often overlooked and thought of as too sweet, but it’s actually a good source of electrolytes magnesium and potassium, which are key for fluid balance and overall hydration during hot summer months. Watermelon also contains lycopene, which has been found to be helpful in preventing sun damage. Have watermelon as a snack on its own or as part of a salad or entrée.   4. Leafy greens

    Leafy greens are a personal favorite of mine, for so many reasons. Spinach for example- may help to lower body temperature due to high water content and also contains potassium and magnesium- both hydrating and energizing for muscles. Green leafy veggies are also a source of iron that can help to energize too. Try this Maple Beet and Spinach Salad.

  5. Cucumbers

    Cucumbers are naturally hydrating and versatile. You can use them as a snack, or as a part of any meal- like part of a salad, or make a simple cucumber salad like this Cucumber and Tomato Salad.

  6. Tomatoes

    Tomatoes are yummy and seasonal to summertime. They’re loaded with energizing potassium that’s also hydrating, and as a plus they contain carotenoids and lycopene that can naturally help your body protect itself from the sun from the inside out.
